For sale is a Queen Steel vintage folding hunter knife with genuine frontier bone stag handles, better known as Winterbottom bone. The best I can figure is that it was made in the 1940s, but it could have been made earlier or later. It has been sharpened, used and carried but the blades still appear to be almost full and they still walk and talk fairly well. This knife has a very attractive green color on the liner side of the bone.
The main blade still has an excellent etch which says Finest Q - with a crown - and Stainless. The tang of the first blade is stamped with a Q and a crown. The tang of the second blade is marked Stainless.
The back handle has three spots in the bone from the factory when they were peening the pins to hold the bone on. There is also a couple of minor rust marks on the back springs.
The reference I used to identify this knife is the 1978 edition of The Romance of Collecting Knives by Lavona Ferguson and the identification I made was the type #13. It says that the stamp was used from 1946 to 1948.
